image=OGbdfh7LzUElla Fitzgerald - 1963 - Sings The Jerome Kern Song Book (2013)HDTracks 24 bits, 192 KHzElla Fitzgerald is rightfully adored for her superb, often-definitive interpretations of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Rodgers & Hart, and Gershwin tunes, which are well documented in her Song Book series. The addition of Sings the Jerome Kern Song Book to Fitzgerald's discography is welcome. Recorded in 1963, the album proves Fitzgerald's voice as golden as ever.

Yet age was beginning to color her singing a bit, and that texture adds a beautiful dimension to songs like the dark 'Why Was I Born?' And the yearning 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man.' Nelson Riddle's charts are typically smart and swinging, with a lush, full sound that balances punch and lyricism. Fitzgerald's ebullient delivery and honey-rich timbre bring out the humor of 'A Fine Romance,' the wistfulness of 'I'm Old Fashioned,' and the tender romance of 'The Way You Look Tonight,' putting her distinctive stamp on each. It's sure to please fans of Kern and big-band standards, and for aficionados of Fitzgerald's other Song Book albums, this is a must.
image=2zkoaEnmSBElla Fitzgerald - 1964 - Sings The Johnny Mercer Song Book (2013)HDTracks download, 24 bits, 96 KHzAlong with her Rodgers and Hart collection, this is one of the best of Ella Fitzgerald's songbooks. Fitzgerald's assured and elegant voice is a perfect match for Mercer's urbane lyrics and Nelson Riddle's supple arrangements.
In light of this decorous setting, it's not surprising that Mercer's swagger-heavy numbers like 'I Wanna Be Around' and 'One More For My Baby' are skipped in favor of more poised selections such as 'Early Autumn' and 'Skylark.' Even traditionally hard-swinging numbers such as 'Day In Day Out' and 'Something's Gotta Give' are kept in check with Riddle's vaporous, flute-heavy backing and Fitzgerald's velvet tone. Slower numbers like 'Laura' and 'Midnight Sun' add dramatic contrast with their enigmatic tonal backdrops and elongated vocal phrasing. Fitzgerald's Mercer songbook has become something of an overlooked gem partly because of the popularity of her Cole Porter and Gershwin collections. It's a shame, because this songbook is beautifully executed by Fitzgerald and Riddle and contains wonderful Mercer collaborations with, among others, Harold Arlen and Hoagy Charmichael. This is definitely one for any Fitzgerald fan and not a bad introduction to her vast catalog.

(1989)HDTracks, 24 bits, 192 KHzAnother typically wonderful CD reissue of Ella Fitzgerald in her prime, this set augments the original LP (which finds Ella joined by pianist Lou Levy, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Joe Mondragon, and drummer Stan Levey) with three previously unreleased selections from the same era (with Levey, bassist Wilfred Middlebrooks, and drummer Gus Johnson). Ella is in fine form on such numbers as 'A Night in Tunisia,' an emotional 'You're My Thrill,' 'Jersey Bounce,' 'Clap Hands! Here Comes Charlie,' and an unissued 'The One I Love (Belongs to Somebody Else).' Although not reaching the heights of her live performances, this is an excellent (and somewhat underrated) set. image=DVeqI3rT7gElla Fitzgerald & Joe Pass - 1983 - Speak LoveThis set of duets with guitarist Joe Pass finds Ella Fitzgerald near the end of her career. Her voice mostly hinted at her former greatness and the setting was perhaps too intimate for what she had left.
Fitzgerald's phrasing remained a joy despite the limited range, but there are many more significant records by the singer than this CD reissue despite touching versions of 'Comes Love,' 'There's No You' and 'Gone with the Wind.' Duke and Ella never sound better.
His orchestra is at its most elegant yet at its most swinging, her voice's is in its best form, so harmonically, rhythmically, and tonally sophisticated. Jazz's greatest event is happening. It is 'Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook,' and it is too great to let pass you by.Alright, this is all true. With Duke's big band behind her, Ella was divine.
She was even classier with his suberb small groups. Most of all, it showed both of their eclecticism. Duke was still overlapping rhythms, harmonies, tones, and different musical styles to their most mesmerizing effect.
Ella was at her career peak at Verve Records. And for the record: Any of the songwriters she covered in the classic Songbook Series never sounded as awesome. She's the glue that provokes the Ellington Orchestra to outdo themselves once again. Their repertoire of jungle music, unique swing songs, lesser known songs, and more experimental songs is covered, and Ella fits these songs like a lace glove. Part of her incredible genius is her ability to adapt any type of music to her ebullient voice.
(On the video of PBS's American Masters special about Ella, listen to her short takes on country and soul in a London Club. Dang!)In comparison to the rest of Ella's stellar career: 'Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook' is her peak. It is the centerpiece in her career's greatest period at Verve Records and the landmark Songbook Series. Of all of them, it's the most jazz-oriented. All of her Songbook albums are first-rate, yet this is the best. And it's also a taste of heaven, too good to let pass you by when you're alive. Get it now.And hey, Chick Webb's orchestra was one of swing's greatest bands, but what if she had spent a part of her career in Duke's orchestra? That might have been even better.
And even she didn't, isn't this album more than enough? image=zSgPQ1EWd5Ella Fitzgerald - Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book VBRYear 1959Disc 11. Sam And Delilah2.

I Got RhythmI read in a book on Nelson Riddle that Ella Fitzgerald had wanted him for her first songbook which was on Cole Porter but unfortunately Riddle was booked with Nat King Cole and at times Sinatra so he was unavailable in '56.
Fortunately three years he became available and perhaps it was serendipity or fate but when these two artists recorded the Gershwin songbook-it became an instant classic. I believe Riddle was at the peak of his arranging powers and Ella was in full voice with none of the wobbly vibrato that would later mar her last session with Riddle- 'Dream Dancing', I believe on Pablo also produced by Norman Granz.
But this set is a must have if you're into Ella's songbook series and of course this musical marriage between these two pros would result in six albums. Riddle was quoted as saying that Ella was his favorite female singer and his sensitivity to her artistry is brilliantly reflected in this album. For instance, Riddle took the risk of slowing down a tune that Ella had performed as a quick tempo scat song, but here the song takes a poignant meaning that makes this version a near classic on a par with the duo's rendition of 'The Man I Love'. In fact I believe this album is so popular that one can only purchase used since all the original copies are sold out.

This cd is not the first to put these two studio recordings together, however it's the first to present songs with a singular theme.

Intimacy is the name of the game, this is a collection of the most intimate songs Ella's recorded. There are no strings here, this music is Ella with trio only, culled from all her albums including the songbooks. The mastering of this disc is excellent; Ella had a tendency to sing really close to the mike and it seems the producer of this disc chose only those songs with Ella up front. The Decca sides are presented here with the best sound to date; the songs are not too sanitized with noise reduction, so listening fatigue is avoided. Overall this is a great summary of her most emotional readings, something not usually associated with her.-Ella Fitzgerald - Ella for Lovers-Artist.: Ella FitzgeraldAlbum.: Ella for LoversGenre.: JazzSource.: CDYear.: 2003FLACRipper.: EAC (Secure mode) / LAME 3.92 & Asus CD-S520Codec.: Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC)Version.: reference libFLAC 1.2.1 20070917Quality.: Lossless, (avg. Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass - 2001 - Sophisticated LadyElla Fitzgerald and Joe Pass made a number of studio recordings as a duo between 1973 and 1986 for Pablo, but this is their first concert CD to appear on the label.
Composed of excerpts from a 1975 date in Hamburg and a 1983 appearance in Tokyo, it provides an interesting contrast as Fitzgerald's abilities declined during the eight-year gap due to health problems. The later material is featured first, and Pass' thoughtful support props her up during the occasional rough spots.
Following a series of Ellington tunes, it becomes obvious that her ability as a scat singer clearly had not diminished, as proven during an increasingly complex version of 'One Note Samba.' They close with a delightfully swinging take of 'Bluesette.' Pass begins the Hamburg set with a trio of unaccompanied solos, including a lush 'Old Folks,' an intricate exploration of the bossa nova 'Wave,' and finally, a sensational run through 'Cherokee' that can only be adequately described as breathtaking. Fitzgerald returns to join the guitarist for a trio of Ellington songs, starting off with the lesser known ballad 'Take Love Easy' (which was also the title track of their then-current first duo LP), along with a surprisingly brief 'Mood Indigo' and an inspired, often humorous 'Satin Doll.'
This rewarding CD makes one wonder if there are more unreleased recording by Fitzgerald and Pass hidden in Fantasy's vaults awaiting discovery.
