Hello and welcome to the community,That's a bizarre issue no doubt about it. The easiest course of action would be to make sure to add '.max' to the end of your file names. So 'MyScene01' becomes 'MyScene01.max'. That should override the Save As type in the dialog for any windows application from my experience.Somewhere the file type associations may have broken for PDF or Max on your system. You could try to hold down shift, right click a Max file, select 'Open With' - Choose Default Program - and select 3ds max.
