So recently I came into contact with a programmer who's helping me fix some games I own. Focusing mostly on mouses fixes but it got me thinking about widescreen fixes too. When it comes to controls there’s no two ways about it.

If the controls suck and can be fixed you should. When it comes to games made for 4:3 aspect ratios however, I’m a little more hesitant to fix them.

Sometimes doing so causes weird artefacts or sometimes causes you to see things you otherwise wouldn’t. It can also lead to some serious headache down the track. I’ll give you some examples:Forcing original Quake 3 to use 16:9 shortens your FOV. Increasing the FOV cause your weapons to deform.Serious Sam the second encounter has a sniper files that is locked at 90 FOV when equipped. So if you use a widescreen resolution and FOV as soon as you press 9 to equip the sniper file you revert back to 90 even if you’re not zooming in.Finely Matro 2033/Last Light should only be played at 16:9 as any other aspect ratio will distort things. Circles will be ovals and squares will be rectangles. Also you might notice that Metro has a really small FOV, but if you adjust it, you’ll break the game’s ironsight making sniping almost impossible. What are your thoughts on this.

How much trouble are you willing to go through to get extra screen space and what are you willing to put up with. Sometimes I just settle for the black bars on either side of my screen.

TinyE: I will go as far as to apply fixes and change an ini file but I'm not going to try and recode anything. I have had surprisingly good luck so far; WS fixes for NFS and GTA games are all surprisingly easy and effective.I always go to WSGF first when looking for a fix. They have become my beacon. Yeah WSGF are good though sometimes you need to implant hacks to get things to work. For Deus Ex invisible war there's an unofficial widescreen hack but it provides other befits and I didn't notice any real side affects so I think it's worth using. Magmarock: What are your thoughts on this. Mow much trouble are you willing to go through to get extra screen space and what are you willing to put up with.

Sometimes I just settle for the black bars on either side of my screen. How far would I go?Check out Chrome unofficial patch:or Abuse SDL:But I said never again. I use fixes I can find on Widescreen Gaming Forums, PC Gaming Wikit, etc. Jackfuste is a great member there on WSGF, he fixed some games I asked and is always ready to help. Then there is Flawless Widescreen which is a good tool for Unreal Engine 3 games.I try to run all games at widescreen resolutions, I always look for widescreen fixes before I start playing a game, but I have no trouble playing at 4:3 or low resolution if I have to. Few years ago I played Fallout 1 and 2 at 640x480 without knowing it had a high resolution fix, I played Duke Nukem 3D and original Doom at their native resolution and had a ton of fun.

In the end it doesn't really matter, I'm happy as long as the game runs properly. However playing at low FOV is a problem, because I can feel disoriented and my eyes and head hurt. It is fascinating that even today a FOV slider is not a standard in many games. If the game is Ver- in widescreen, I would rather stick with 4:3.

Widescream was one of the biggest revelations for me; i got my first widescreen monitor in 2013 (19') but i lost quite a significant amount of vertical real estate which it wasn't good. Introduction to architecture ching pdf. A year later a purchased a 22' (my current monitor) and i didn't look back again. I always play my games in widescreen mode (when possible) since i don't like having black borders. Plus, widescreen in racing & flight sims is a must (you could say the same with a multiple monitor setup, personally i can't afford it) especially if you can alter the fov.

So yeah, fix away!
